Frequently Asked Questions

What is SupraVerden?

SupraVerden is an open dataset of international organisations. It aims to create a comprehensive list of entities established by legal agreements between countries, such as treaties.

What counts as an international organisation?

An international organisation, for the purposes of this site, is a legal person created by legal agreements between countries. This does not cover organisations that operate in multiple countries but are created under and subject to the national law of one country. See the full criteria for inclusion.

If an organisation is created under the laws of one country but is recognised as an international organisation by being afforded special immunities and privileges, then it can be included.

What does not count?

What is the FATF definition?

The FATF (Financial Action Task Force) defines international organisations as entities established by formal political agreements between their member States that have the status of international treaties, whose existence is recognised by law in their member countries, and which are not treated as resident institutional units of the countries in which they are located.

This site includes an assessment of whether each organisation is likely to satisfy the FATF definition.

What is a Basis for Assessment code?

Each organisation has a basis code (e.g. B9, B22) that explains why it was assessed as included in or excluded from the FATF definition. You can browse all codes on the Basis codes page.

What is an SPRVD ID?

SPRVD IDs are unique identifiers assigned by this site to each organisation record. They follow the format SPRVD0 followed by six digits.

What is LEI data?

The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-character code used to uniquely identify legal entities participating in financial transactions (ISO 17442). Where available, LEI data is shown including the entity’s registration status, category, legal form, and jurisdiction.

What are the data sources?

Sources include the United Nations Treaty Series, EU publications, Wikidata, OpenSanctions, and national government publications. Each organisation record includes links to its specific sources. See the full research notes for more detail.

How is the data licensed?

The data is from confirmordeny/supraverden, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Is this site affiliated with FATF?

No. This site is not affiliated with nor endorsed by FATF.
